Southern Morocco: 1,500 km of scenery between the Atlas Mountains and the desert

There are journeys that move you more than they simply take you places. A tour of southern Morocco is one of them.
Here, time stretches out among ochre-colored kasbahs, lonely roads, lush palm groves, and golden dunes. You don’t just pass through southern Morocco: you listen to it, observe it, and feel it.
Spanning over 1,500 kilometers, this road trip through the Moroccan desert reveals an incredible diversity of landscapes and atmospheres, where each stop tells a different story.
Between the Atlas Mountains and the Desert: A Legendary Route
The journey often begins at the Tizi n'Tichka Pass, a winding mountain road that connects Marrakech to the southern border.
As you descend from the High Atlas, the landscapes change: lush green valleys give way to a more arid land, sculpted by the wind and sun.
Along the way, certain stops stand out, such as the Ouzoud Waterfalls or the Iminifri Natural Bridge, an impressive arch carved into the rock.
Further south, the Dades Valley and the Valley of Roses reveal contrasting landscapes: vertiginous cliffs, Berber villages clinging to the mountainside, and fields of roses in the spring. Every bend in the road is an invitation to stop and take it all in.
Even if the distances seem short, take your time. It’s often the unexpected stops that leave the biggest impression.

Kasbahs, palm groves, and Berber villages
Southern Morocco is a land of architecture and traditions.
In the palm groves of Skoura and Zagora, life revolves around water — a precious and scarce resource. Here you’ll find earthen kasbahs, some in ruins, others restored as guesthouses, perfectly integrated into their surroundings.
Some visits leave a deeper impression, such as the Amerhidil Kasbah in Skoura, which offers a breathtaking view of the palm grove and, in the distance, the still-snow-capped peaks of the Atlas Mountains.
Encounters are often simple, always sincere: a shared cup of mint tea in the shade of a palm tree, a stroll through the cultivated gardens of the palm grove, a smile exchanged as you pass through a village.
Here, authenticity isn’t a marketing concept, it’s a way of life.
The Desert: The Ultimate Experience
Then comes the long-awaited moment: the desert.
In Merzouga, at the gateway to Erg Chebbi, the first dunes appear on the horizon like a frozen sea.
People often travel there on camelback at the end of the day, when the light softens. Silence gradually settles in as you move further away from the village.
Spending the night in a camp remains one of the most vivid memories of a trip through southern Morocco. As the sun disappears behind the dunes, the desert glows with shades of orange and pink. Later, under an incredibly starry sky, the calm becomes almost palpable.
Opt for a comfortable campsite to fully enjoy the experience without sacrificing the desert’s charm.

A journey that winds through oases and kasbahs
After the desert, the journey continues through equally fascinating landscapes.
The Drâa Valley, dotted with palm groves and traditional villages, offers a glimpse into a more intimate side of Morocco. Traveling along the river, you’ll pass through ancient villages and historic ruins that bear witness to the old caravan routes.
Further north, stops such as Ouarzazate or the ksar of Aït Ben Haddou offer a glimpse of another side of southern Morocco, blending cultural heritage with iconic film sets.
A Journey for the Senses
Traveling through southern Morocco is also a journey for the senses:
the ever-changing light, from sunrise to sunset
the spices: cumin, saffron, ras el hanout
the textures: from fine sand to Berber rugs
the flavors: slow-cooked tagines, wood-fired bread
But also more unexpected moments: Gnaoua music in a desert village, the silence of a palm grove at day’s end, or the coolness of an oasis after hours on the road.
