Why India’s wilderness surprised me

I never imagined that India would captivate me so much as a safari destination. Until then, I had associated safaris primarily with Africa - with endless savannahs, herds of elephants and lions. So, before my trip, I was excited but also somewhat sceptical: Would game drives in India fascinate me just as much? And what were the chances of actually seeing one of the rare Bengal tigers or a greater one-horned rhino?

Safaris in India - more intense than expected

My doubts disappeared after the first few game drives. The national parks are professionally managed, the guides are experienced and the safaris are surprisingly intense. You generally head out twice a day: early in the morning, often before sunrise, and once again in the afternoon.

The excitement lasts until the very last minute. A tiger could suddenly appear around any bend, among the tall grasses or deep in the jungle. Yet even when the famous inhabitant of India’s forests does not reveal itself straight away, there is always something to discover.

So much more than tigers

The Bengal tiger is, of course, the star of any safari in India. But the country’s wildlife is far more diverse than I had expected. Alongside tigers, India is home to leopards, sloth bears, Asiatic wild dogs—known as dholes—gaur, chital and sambar deer, several species of antelope and crocodiles. There is also an impressive variety of birdlife.

Every national park has its own character

Choosing the right national parks is an important part of planning a safari through India. After all, not every part of India is the same—just as no two safari regions in Africa are identical.

Each park has its own distinctive landscape and wildlife. Some regions are known for their tiger populations, while others offer particularly good chances of spotting leopards, Asiatic lions, wild dogs or the rare barasingha deer.

In one park, you may drive through dense jungle; elsewhere, open grasslands, wetlands or the foothills of the Himalayas await.

A carefully planned itinerary is therefore essential. It not only provides a varied range of landscapes, but also increases your chances of encountering many different species.

India and Africa—two different safari worlds

Anyone who has already been on safari in Africa will recognise some familiar elements in India: drives in open safari vehicles, experienced rangers and guides, reading tracks and the eager search for wild animals. That indescribable feeling when an animal suddenly emerges from the undergrowth is exactly the same.

Even so, the two destinations can hardly be compared directly. Their landscapes and wildlife are completely different. In India, the tiger takes centre stage in much the same way as the lion often does in Africa.

Then there is the country’s cultural diversity. A safari can be combined wonderfully with a visit to the Taj Mahal, magnificent temples, vibrant cities and places steeped in history. The result is a journey that brings together nature, culture and human encounters in a truly special way.

17 tiger sightings and a true goosebumps moment

What surprised me most was the number of tiger sightings we had. By the end of the trip, we had experienced a total of 17 encounters. On almost every game drive, we saw one or even several tigers.

The ultimate goosebumps moment came during only my second tiger sighting: just a few metres in front of our safari vehicle, a golden tiger calmly crossed the track. Seeing this rare colour variation in the wild and at such close range was an experience I will never forget.

Our encounters with greater one-horned rhinos were equally impressive.

Overall, we saw an astonishing number of animals during the safaris. Hardly a single game drive passed without a special encounter or a genuine wow moment.

The guides played a major role in making these experiences possible. They were dedicated, spoke good English and proved to be excellent trackers. They often spotted signs that I would have missed entirely.

When the jungle awakens

The atmosphere in the early morning is particularly special. The drive through the national park begins before sunrise. The air is cool, the jungle is still at first, and then nature slowly begins to stir.

When the first rays of sunlight finally filter through the canopy, time seems to stand still for a moment. At times like these, you feel far removed from everyday life and connected to the world in its most elemental form.

A country that changed my expectations

Before my trip, I did have concerns. I found myself thinking about the images of poverty so often associated with India. Once I arrived, however, I quickly realised that this vast and diverse country has so much more to offer.

With a good guide, its culture, history and everyday life can be discovered in a comfortable and enriching way. My initial concerns soon gave way to genuine enthusiasm.

I will continue to travel to Africa with great passion. But India has now earned a firm place among the world’s most fascinating safari destinations for me. Anyone who loves nature and would like to experience a safari from an entirely new perspective should definitely consider India.

One thing is already certain for me: this was not my last trip to India.
