“Luxury today is less visible – but far more deeply felt.”
Luxury has become quieter. It is no longer about staging or appearances, but about experiences that truly resonate. About time instead of schedules, privacy instead of perfection, and journeys that leave a lasting impression long after returning home.
Today’s discerning travellers are searching for places with character, authentic encounters and tailor-made experiences that genuinely reflect who they are.
What does luxury travel mean to you personally – and how has the perception of luxury evolved in recent years?
For me, luxury travel is above all about grounding and reconnecting with myself. Luxury means returning home to Austria, consciously experiencing nature – breathing in the scent of the trees, feeling the leaves beneath my feet, being active outdoors. Authentic, high-quality food, time for my body and mental calmness have become essential to me.
Of course, I also appreciate exceptional accommodations and elegant luxury hotels, especially those that create a genuine sense of comfort and authenticity. True luxury arises when comfort and quality are perfectly in harmony with the spirit of a destination and the surrounding nature.
Over the past years, the idea of luxury has changed significantly: away from status symbols, extravagance and the pursuit of “more, faster, more exclusive” – towards meaning, mindfulness and individuality. Today, time, space, tranquillity, health and authentic experiences have become the true luxuries.
Guests are no longer simply looking for extraordinary hotels; they seek emotional connections with a destination, sustainable concepts, regional quality and deeply personal experiences. Luxury today is less visible – yet far more meaningful and tangible.
What luxury travel trends are you currently seeing? Are there any emerging destinations or concepts that are particularly in demand?
We are currently witnessing a clear shift towards meaningful luxury. Travellers are moving away from classic hotspots and are increasingly seeking exceptional destinations with depth and authenticity.
Remote regions such as Bhutan, Patagonia, Namibia or lesser-explored islands in Southeast Asia are particularly sought after at the moment.
From a conceptual perspective, Private Journeys, ultra-low-density luxury – meaning fewer guests and more space – as well as travel experiences with personal added value are becoming increasingly important. This includes health and longevity retreats, expedition cruises and tailor-made cultural or nature experiences accompanied by experts.
What do discerning travellers seek today – exclusivity and privacy, or authentic experiences with a local connection?
In reality, they seek both – and not as a contradiction.
Today’s luxury travellers expect maximum privacy combined with genuine authenticity. They want to stay in exclusive settings while experiencing destinations in a meaningful and local way: a private dinner with a local family, privileged access to places outside regular opening hours or encounters with people who offer authentic insights into culture and everyday life.
Luxury is no longer defined by gold and glamour, but by time, individuality and access to truly exceptional experiences.
Can you share an example of a journey that particularly inspired you or perfectly represents what Lobster Experience stands for?
One particularly defining experience for me was a tailor-made journey to BAWE Island.
The island represents exclusive barefoot luxury on a private island off the coast of Zanzibar. Access is reserved exclusively for the resort’s own boats, ensuring the highest level of privacy and exclusivity.
The resort consists entirely of standalone villas with private pools, creating an atmosphere of complete tranquillity far away from any hustle and bustle. The island itself is lush, green and densely forested, creating a true Robinson Crusoe feeling – interpreted in a refined and luxurious way.
One of the highlights is the romantic Love Grotto, a unique retreat where guests can enjoy unforgettable moments over cocktails or champagne.
Sustainability, personalised gastronomy and attentive service are deeply embedded in the concept, making BAWE Island a place where nature, seclusion and timeless elegance blend perfectly together.
This also perfectly reflects what Lobster Experience stands for: the ideal combination of flawless organisation, deep cultural understanding and genuine goosebump moments. Journeys that cannot simply be booked – they must be truly experienced when every detail comes together seamlessly.
How can luxury and sustainability be combined? Are there any projects or properties that stand out in this regard?
Luxury and sustainability are no longer opposites – quite the contrary. Sustainability has increasingly become a defining quality feature of luxury.
The most inspiring properties are those that are deeply rooted in their local environment, use resources consciously and actively involve local communities through fair employment opportunities or social initiatives.
We are particularly impressed by lodges and hotels that do not simply communicate sustainability, but genuinely live it – from regenerative architecture and regional supply chains to nature conservation initiatives.
For our clients, it is important to know that their travel experiences do not come at the expense of the environment or local cultures – and ideally even contribute positively to them.
Examples that stand out in this field include The Capra in Switzerland and the Kamalaya Wellness Sanctuary & Holistic Spa in Thailand.
What would personally define the perfect luxury journey for you?
For me, the perfect luxury journey would be a wellbeing retreat in a mountain hotel featuring exceptional beds, a longevity programme, rejuvenating treatments, IHHT training, restorative infusions, outdoor activities, healthy cuisine and a beautiful spa and sauna landscape.
A journey that allows you to truly slow down, recharge and reconnect with yourself.
