Gyeongju
Gyeongju, known as the “museum without walls,” is truly enchanting. Its cityscape is rich in traditional architecture, distinctive grass-covered burial mounds (known as tumuli), temples, rock carvings, statues, ruins, and pagodas, all set against a backdrop of gentle green mountains.
The Bulguksa Temple, located on the slopes of Mount Toham and built on a series of stone terraces, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an absolute must-see. The Gyeongju National Museum is equally worth a visit, with its fascinating collections of jewelry, weapons, and ceremonial artifacts.
You can also visit Golgulsa Temple to experience demonstrations of traditional Korean martial arts, enjoy a hike or scenic walk in Gyeongju National Park, explore Cheomseongdae Observatory—the oldest in East Asia—and sample a variety of fresh seafood at the covered market near Gyeongju Station.
